Holders, Golden Eaglets, progressed into the last
eight of the FIFA U-17 World Cup after whitewashing
their Australian counterparts 6-0 early on Thursday
morning in Chile.
An hattrick from Victor Osimhen, a spot kick from
skipper Kelechi Nwakali and goal a piece by Edidibong
Essien and Samuel Chukwueze pitched Nigeria against
Brazil in the quarter final stage of the competition.
Earlier in the day, Brazil edged past a brave New
Zealand side with a stoppage-time penalty kick to win
1-0.
Osimhen opened scoring in the 22nd minute via a
solo effort.
The forward dribbled past two defenders to put
Nigeria ahead.
Just after Nigeria grabbed the opener, the Aussies
came close to levelling up but Eaglets’ custodian,
Akpan Udoh, was well positioned to deny them the
equaliser.
Again, the Nigerians were rewarded as Funsho
Bamgboye was tripped off the ball in the vital area.
Skipper, Kelechi Nwakali stepped forward and coolly
placed the kick in the net at exactly 25th minute to
make it two.
Desperate to reduce the tally, the Australian gaffer,
Tony Vidmar, introduced Charlie Devereux for Jake
Brimmer, but time was too little for the new entrant
to make an impression as score line stood at 2-0 at
first half.
On resumption for the second half, the Aussies
launched several attacking forays into the Nigerians
goal area but their efforts were curtailed by John
Lazarus, David Enogela, Lukman Zakari and Kingsley
Michael in the defence.
Edidiong Essien and Samuel Chukwueze went ahead
to compound the woes of their opponents by two
more goals towards the closing minute of the tie.
Nigeria will slug it out with Brazil in the quarter final
on Sunday.
